Known as the “gem of the nature coast,” Cedar Key is a cross between Downeast Maine and Greenwich Village. The small grouping of islands offers history and archeology, an artist colony and a fishing community. The romantic atmosphere of Cedar Key is also what attracts visitors year round. There are two museums to visit. Cedar Key Historical Society Museum has artifacts and photos, which tell the story of how Cedar Key has grown through eras of pencil making, sponging, fishing and turtling. Cedar Key State Museum documents the island’s history as a naval base, shipbuilding center, fishing port and lumber town.
