Just the mention of Palm Beach and its adjoining areas brings to mind the exclusiveness of an elite type of lifestyle. This stretch between Ft. Lauderdale and Fort Pierce is a desirable mix of influential and down to earth.
Beginning this tour from Ft. Lauderdale, drive north on A1A (Atlantic Boulevard) for about 6 miles. This takes you into Pompano Beach where you can experience harness racing at its finest. Next, head west on Sample Road to visit Butterfly World inside Tradewinds Park. You can become part of this world of fluttering beauties, indoor rain forest, water and botanical gardens and a fine hummingbird exhibit. If you drive east on Sample Road to Powerline and are up to water skiing, the Quiet Waters Park is a good choice.
Next, return back to A1A and go north through Deerfield Beach past the fishing pier. Now you are in Boca Raton. This wealthy town has been thriving since the 1920’s when Addison Mizner came through, bought property and built The Boca Raton Hotel, an absolutely exquisite place to stay and visit. Now, if you cross over US1, you may tour the Children’s Museum and Museum of Art.
Heading north on A1A again, for 8 miles, brings you to Delray Beach, another beautiful town filled with a character of wealth but in an atmosphere of low key. A charming downtown provides residents and tourists with culture and arts. If you drive west on Atlantic Boulevard, it will take you to Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens for a peaceful retreat of exotic plants and Japanese Art.
Continuing north on US1 or A1A, will take you up to Lake Worth. If you head west on Southern Boulevard, this will take you out to Lion Country Safari. This 500-acre, wildlife refuge abounds with many different species and is lots of fun for the whole family. This attraction includes nature trails, a petting zoo, a river cruise and an amusement park with rides.
On to the very famous and desirable town of Palm Beach. If you are coming into Palm Beach, along US1, you will turn right on Royal Palm Way, then left onto Coconut Row to visit the famous Henry Morrison Flagler Whitehall Estate. When you come in on A1A, you will turn left onto Worth Avenue, the outstanding avenue of fine shops, art galleries and restaurants. Driving around Palm Beach will not get you lost, as this island is very accessible. On Ocean Boulevard is the renowned Breakers Hotel. Built by Flagler in 1926, this Hotel remains one of the finest, world famous landmarks. If by chance, you happen to be in town on a Sunday morning, you must try the scrumptious, Beach Club Champagne Brunch, which is known to have the finest and most selection of delicious entrees.
Going back into the mainland, take Royal Palm Way then turning right onto US1. The next three towns, Juno Beach, Jupiter and Jensen Beach, are basically quiet and laid back. This is the largest area of sea turtle nesting grounds. As you come up to Jupiter, there are three highlights along SR 707. They are the Loxahatchee Historical Society Museum, the Jupiter Lighthouse and the Blowing Rocks Preserve.
As you continue north to Stuart, turn right onto Hutchinson Island. Tour the House of Refuge dating back to 1875. This is the only one left in Florida. One mile north is the Elliot Museum where you can enjoy the moment of going back in time. Continue north to the St. Lucie County Historical Museum. Now cross over to the mainland, turning left and driving south on US 1. Go through Fort Pierce on SR 707 south to Jensen Beach. Turn right to catch US 1 south to downtown Stuart, a lovely town with quaint little shops and museums. Again, continue south until you come to Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Take a break and enjoy this one, then continue south all the way back to Fort Lauderdale.
