Map: Miami
Miami’s Southside is a melting pot of chic European and laidback Bahamian cultures. Visit the warm beaches of Key Biscayne, the exclusive villages of Coral Gables, the trendy Coconut Grove and the earthy Little Havana. Included in this tour is Florida’s Metro zoo, Fairchild Tropical Garden and Parrot Jungle. Starting at the Visitor Center, Bayside Market Place, take Brickell Avenue south. The first landmark is the 33-story Barnett Banking Tower and other mighty banking structures. The eye-catching Banco de Venezuela is outstanding and represents the importance of Miami’s Latin American Banking Commerce. Catch the view of two more exceptional structures, the Villa Regina and the magnificent 20-story Atlantis, which is the trademark of “Miami Vice.” Next, turn left onto the Rickenbacker Causeway and continue for 8 miles to the beautiful island of Key Biscayne. The lush pine groves and warm sandy beaches are a perfect retreat from Miami’s Downtown Area. Several beaches and recreational areas are great for all the watersport activities you have included in your plans. Next, is a visit to the Miami Seaquarium and International Tennis Center at Crandon Park. Last, continue to drive to the tip of the key. At the Bill Baggs Recreation Area is where you will find the historical landmark of Cape Florida Lighthouse. Here you can enjoy a picnic or barbeque at Key Biscayne’s loveliest beach. The next segment of your driving tour, return across Rickenbacker Causeway. Turn left onto South Miami Avenue/South Bayshore Drive. Take a 50-minute tour of Vizcaya, the winter home of industrialist millionaire “James Deering”. This 34-room villa with magnificent gardens was a meeting place for President Reagan and Pope John Paul II in 1987. Opposite of Vizcaya is the Miami Science Museum and Planetarium. Continuing on Bayshore Drive for 2 miles, will take you through Coconut Grove. Bayshore Drive now becomes Old Cutler Road. This is where you will enjoy a fun filled afternoon at the Fairfield Tropical Garden or Parrot Jungle. Continue on Old Cutler Road, turning right onto Coral Reef Drive. Head west 13 miles to the Metrozoo and Gold Coast Railroad Museum. These attractions have a variety of entertaining shows and activities to amuse the whole family. Next, continue north onto SW 137th Avenue, turn right at North Kendall Drive/SW 88th Street, cross Florida’s Turnpike and turn left onto SR 874 until it joins SR 826. Head north and turn right on Coral Way/SW 22nd Street. Drive 19 miles to Coral Gables, Miami’s most exclusive community. This is where you will discover 80 years of old-world Mediterranean ambience. Visit the Merrick’s house and the Coral Gables House on Coral Way, and then turn right onto Toledo Boulevard. Here is where you will find The Venetian Pool. This stunning public pool was carved out of coral rock back in 1924 and offers it’s guests stone bridges and rock caves. Turning right onto Anastasia Avenue will bring you to the outstanding Biltmore Hotel, and turning left onto Granada Boulevard will take you through the campus of the University of Miami. Next, turn right at Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Experience the wonderful exhibits and art at the Lowe Art Museum. Follow Ponce de Leon Boulevard to the left until you reach SW 8th Street, which brings you into Little Havana. Known as Miami’s Latin Quarter, you will enjoy all the café’s and open air markets. Staying on SW 8th Street will bring you back to Brickell Avenue, turn left and drive three miles back to the Bayside Marketplace.
