This is said to be one of the most desirable locations in all of Florida. When someone mentions Captiva, Sanibel or Lover’s Key it sends thoughts of a beautiful island like Tahiti. Starting out at the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, 17200 San Carlos Boulevard, you will head south on SR 865 for 14 miles. Go through Lovers Key and Big Hickory Island, when you get to Bonita Beach, head inland driving through Bonita Shores. Turn left onto US 41. Your first stop is The Everglades Wonder Garden. This happens to be the oldest attraction in Florida, but is still very popular for its educational and entertaining tours of its birds, mammals and reptiles. Next, keep driving north about 5 miles until you come to The Koreshan State Historic Site. Back in 1894, a man by the name of Cyrus Reed Teed gave himself a biblical name (Koresh). He brought followers from Chicago and promoted celibacy, communal living and ownership. After he died in 1908, his movement declined and the area was later restored for its turn-of-the-century appearance. Here it is noted that there is no connection to the Waco Cult of David Koresh. Continuing your drive on US 41 for 12 miles, you will turn left on Colonial Boulevard, which in then will bring you to McGregor Boulevard, follow this north for 3 miles. You now come to The Edison-Ford Complex. For those who love history and the turn of the century era, you will find this site exceptional. The tours are in depth since there are a lot of things to see and learn. Take your time and enjoy this famous attraction. Now as you leave here, follow the signs taking you to The Fort Myers Historical Museum and Imaginarium, heading east on McGregor and then to Dr Martin Luther King Boulevards. These two Museums are wonderful for the whole family. Now head north on Jackson Street for 1 mile and park your car. This is the Fort Myers Yacht Basin and Downtown. You may want to take a rest or grab a bite to eat. You will find this lovely area is filled with shopping arcades and a busy square along First Street. Take a tour of the Burroughs Home, which was built in 1901. There are several cruises to catch at the Yacht Basin if you prefer. When you get back in your car, cross the river on US 41 and head north for 5 miles to the famous Shell Factory. Here you will find the largest assortment in the world. Now return south, 1½ mile, and then turn right on SR 78. Drive east for 13 miles to Matlacha. Stop at the Pine Island Chamber then continue four more miles to Pine Island. Start at the Museum of the Islands, which is at the corner of Russell Road and Sesame Drive. You can rent a boat to take you to the other islands or just enjoy a leisurely hour. Next, head back to Matlacha, and after four miles onto the mainland, turn right onto Chiquita Boulevard. Drive south to Cape Coral Boulevard turn left and go four miles to the Cape Coral Bridge crossing over Caloosahatchee and onto McGregor Boulevard. Next head south to the Sanibel Causeway. This is where you come to the Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Unlike anywhere else, the beauty in which these islands possess will grab your attention and take you captive. There are many things to see and do on these islands, which include Museums, nature trails and wildlife ventures. As you are ending this tour, return to SR 867 and turn right on SR 865, which takes you back to Fort Myers Beach.
