Marathon, a small city at the center of the Florida Keys, boasts the conveniences of a modern community, yet retains the charm of its roots as a 19th-century fishing village.
It is a growing tourist resort that invites nature lovers to enjoy one of the Florida Keys' most scenic and historic treats.
The blue-green panorama of the gulf and ocean, dotted with lobster traps and sailboats, is not unlike the setting viewed by passengers traveling on Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad from 1912 until 1935. The tiny five-acre island nestled below the old Seven-Mile Bridge is Pigeon Key. Step back into history to the Key that was home to the men that built Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad.
Crane Point Hammock, one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in the Keys, contains pre-Colombian and prehistoric Bahamian artifacts, and once was the site of an entire Indian village. On this site are located the Museum of Natural History of the Florida Keys and an adjoining children's museum.
Tropical plants abound, and a nature trail follows the shore of a tidal lagoon. Swimming, snorkeling, diving, fishing, boating and camping are yours for the doing. Dog paddle in the shallows or float lazily on a raft, perfecting your enviable tan. Marathon's own Coco Plum Beach and Sombrero Beach are complete with playgrounds
Marathon is well known for tarpon, offshore, reef and flats fishing. Regardless of your style, you may prefer to hire the services of a local licensed guide, who knows the area and understands the movements and feeding habits of your quarry. There are many charter boats and captains available.
