Founded in 1838, this town was named in honor of President James Madison.
In close proximity to Tallahassee, Madison is known to be a city with a great amount of natural beauty and history.
In the very heart of Madison's downtown, the Four Freedom Monument stands. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt commissioned this monument to stand in honor of the late Colin P. Kelly, the first U.S. war hero of World War II. The six-block tour of Four Freedoms Park has very aesthetic pre-civil war and 19th century Greek revival architecture.
Madison's commercial district includes Elmer’s Genealogy Library and T.J Beggs and Co., a mercantile museum. Visit North Florida Community College to see the Wardlaw-Smith-Gora Mansion and Conference Center and the Ladell Brothers Outdoor Environmental Center.
For outdoor recreation, Cherry Lake has great swimming, boating and fishing. The Suwannee, Withlacochee and Aucilla rivers are great for swimming, diving, canoeing, fishing and camping. For land activities, you will love Twin Rivers State Park, which has great trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
