Tarpon Springs is located in Pinellas County, 13 miles north of Clearwater and 30 miles northwest of Tampa. It is the oldest city in Pinellas County and was incorporated in 1887.
Tarpon Springs is the sponge capitol of the world. Sponge diving exhibitions, deep-sea fishing and cruise excursions depart regularly. Its waterfront is a working seaport and shopping district with the unmistakable feel of a Grecian fishing village.
Downtown Tarpon Springs reflects its Victorian past. The turn-of-the-century buildings now house antique shops with over 200 dealers, art galleries, studios, cafes, and Bed and Breakfast inns.
There is plenty to see and do, like visiting the 120,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, or touring the sponge museum. The Fred Howard Park and Beach and Sunset Beachattract many sun lovers to the gulf side of Tarpon Springs. A.L. Anderson Park on Lake Tarpon offers picnicking, fishing, boat ramps and nature trails. There are also five city parks with tennis courts, softball diamonds and play areas.
On the site of the old railroad tracks is the Pinellas Trail, which invites walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters. It extends from Tarpon Springs to the south of St. Petersburg.
