The most popular vacation spot on Florida’s West Coast, St. Petersburg consists of 26 distinct communities, ranging from Greek fishing hamlets to barrier island beach communities.

Variety is characteristic of the St. Petersburg area. One can slip away from the beach and enjoy all the features of a metropolitan area, spend a day on a deserted island, or wander through a pioneer village. Families, couples and business travelers all return again and again. Once you have experienced the area firsthand, it is not hard to see why.

Great Weather for Water Sports

The tropical climate lends to the activities on and near the water, and is the main focal points for visitors. More than 60 marinas and yacht clubs provide every type of water activity imaginable.

With all the water in our area, no one should be surprised to discover that fishing is serious business around here. So it's not at all unusual for a visitor to return home with a hard-fought trophy taken from our waters.

The dedicated fisherman is more likely to enjoy a guided charter out on the big water. Knowledgeable captains in well-equipped fishing boats will put you "on the fish" in half-day, all-day and even overnight charters.

For the visitor, this means spectacular boating opportunities. If you want to start small, rent a Jet Ski, a small sailboat or another personal watercraft. Many hotels will have them for you right on the beach, along with the instruction you'll need to get started.

Activities are not restricted to the water. Golf and tennis play an important role. You'll find nearly 100 courses throughout the area. So whether you're a hacker or a low handicapper, there's a course to fit your game and budget.

St. Petersburg's public parks and nature trails are a showcase for natural beauty. The St. Petersburg area has a collection of its own attractions, including festive piers, a seabird sanctuary and marine aquarium.

Art and history are celebrated throughout the year at numerous festivals, shows and museums, including the Salvador Dali Museum, Florida International Museum, Florida Holocaust Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, and the St. Petersburg Museum of History.

Dining can be as formal or a casual as one prefers. Seafood is an area specialty, and it is always fresh, plentiful and reasonable. There are more than 78 major shopping centers, modern malls and a variety of quaint, waterfront boutiques for arts and antiques.

So plan your next vacation in St. Petersburg, where you'll have a splendid time!
